Public Values

Guideline and Self-Assessment for Immersive Experiences (IX).

Public values guideline

As with all digital applications, IX can be misused. Since CIIIC aims to create not only economic but also societal impact, public values are a key part of the programme.

On behalf of CIIIC, PublicSpaces, Waag Futurelab and the Rathenau Institute drew up a practical guideline for dealing with public values and ethical dilemmas in immersive experiences (IX), together with a self-assessment for participants in the calls.

In line with earlier research by the Rathenau Institute, the following seven values take centre stage:

The seven core values

Privacy

Protecting user data and personal information in immersive environments where the boundaries between physical and digital blur.

Self-determination

Safeguarding autonomy and freedom of choice. Users keep control over their experience and their data.

Democracy

Supporting democratic principles and participation. IX should contribute to a well-informed society.

Health

Protecting physical and mental well-being, with attention to motion sickness, eye strain and psychological effects.

Safety

Preventing harm to users: both physical safety and protection against manipulation and deception.

Inclusivity, participation & non-discrimination

Equal access and non-discrimination. IX experiences should be accessible to everyone, regardless of disability.

Sustainability

Environmental and social responsibility, with awareness of the ecological footprint of IX technology.

With these values as a starting point, an initial version of a learning guideline and self-assessment has been developed, which forms the basis for CIIIC’s activities. It is crucial that IX users are not harmed in any way, that financial interests in a production are clearly stated, and that IX professionals operate with business transparency.

The guideline and self-assessment are intended for everyone involved in Immersive Experiences (IX): developers, designers, researchers, IX education, users from the public and private sectors, and other stakeholders.

The relevance of this guideline is clear. The best way to formulate and apply it in this fast-evolving field remains an ongoing subject of research. The Public Values Guideline and Self-Assessment are therefore learning tools that will be refined throughout the CIIIC programme.
